This systematic review and meta-analysis of 123 studies (1,705 participants) found that nitrate supplementation—particularly through beetroot juice or a nitrate-rich diet—results in small but significant performance improvements, especially during exercise lasting 2–10 minutes and under hypoxic conditions. The effect is greatest at a dosage of 5–14.9 mmol approximately 150 minutes before exercise and is reduced by practices that damage the oral microbiota (e.g., antibacterial mouthwashes). Nitrate salts are less effective than natural sources.
